Composed during his Italian stay at the beginning of the 18th century, Handel’s cantatas, interpreted by the soprano Anna Kasyan, draw a nuanced picture of opera heroin’s heart. At this time, women were not often allowed to appear in front of an audience. However, the Italian prima donna Margherita Durastanti, one of the few professional female singers of the period, delighted listeners with her brilliant interpretations of Handel’s cantatas. Besides, their librettos favor female characters such as Lucrezia, and describe the dilemma of love against duty. It’s now up to Anna Kasyan to express the multiple shades of a woman’s emotional life in this theatrical and virtuoso program. Crowned at the Vincenzo Bellini Belcanto Competition, she shows great technique in the ornamentation, and polishes the phrasing at the nearest of the text and affects.

Composées lors du séjour italien de Haendel au début du XVIIIe siècle, les cantates interprétées par la soprano Anna Kasyan dessinent une cartographie nuancée du coeur des héroïnes d’opéra. Ce sont alors les castrats qui brûlent les planches des scènes italiennes mais quelques cantatrices se font tout de même entendre. Ces cantates italiennes furent ainsi exécutées en leur temps par Margherita Durastanti.
Anna Kasyan prend le relai de la prima donna et fait revivre avec passion les tourments de ces figures déchirées entre amour et devoir. Mélange d’histoire et de mythologie, les livrets des cantates – comme ceux des opéras – font la part belle aux personnages féminins dont Lucrèce est ici le plus parfait modèle.
En réunissant ces partitions, Anna Kasyan offre un programme dramatique et virtuose. Grand prix du concours de belcanto Vincenzo Bellini, elle met sa technique au service de l’expression en renouvelant sans cesse les ornements et en soignant le phrasé au plus prêt du texte et des affects qu’il exprime.
